Saudi Arabia: SAIP Commences Migration of Trade Mark and Patent Records to Unified Platform
The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has commenced the migration of existing trade mark and patent records from its legacy electronic systems to the current unified platform, as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline and consolidate IP administration in Saudi Arabia.
According to information provided by SAIP, the migration will be implemented through a transitional period during which the old and new systems will operate in parallel.
Transitional arrangements
The legacy platforms are expected to remain operational for approximately six months, subject to possible extension. During this period, IP agents may continue to file submissions and complete pending procedures through the old systems in the usual manner. Any transactions completed through these platforms should also be reflected on the new system.
SAIP will announce the definitive date for discontinuing the legacy platforms in due course. Following their closure, agents should retain read-only access to historical trade mark and patent records but will no longer be able to file submissions or undertake procedural actions through the old systems.
Migration of existing records
Existing trade mark and patent records will be migrated to the new platform while retaining their existing application or registration numbers, including the prefixes:
- Trade marks: “TM”
- Patents: “SA”
Importantly, the migration does not currently extend to industrial designs, which will continue to be administered through the legacy system.
Practical implications for rights holders
The transition is intended to consolidate trade mark and patent records within a single platform. Rights holders and their representatives should ensure that their existing records are accurately reflected on the new platform following migration. Pending procedures may continue through the legacy platforms during the transitional period, until SAIP announces their final discontinuation.
CWB will continue to monitor developments and stands ready to assist clients with their work before the Registry, irrespective of the platform in place.
