Hungarian IPO Shifts to Electronic Communication

On 15 September 2026, the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO) transitioned to electronic communication as the default method for all interactions with applicants, rights holders, and their legal representatives. This digital-first approach applies to all IP matters, regardless of how the initial application or request was submitted, provided the client or representative has supplied the necessary identification data.

Because the vast majority of documentation is already processed digitally, this change largely formalises the existing practice to improve efficiency and sustainability. However, electronic administration remains optional under Hungarian law; applicants and their legal representatives are not legally mandated to use it. HIPO will also communicate via paper if the necessary electronic contact details are missing or incorrect.
