Tanzania: Foreign Trade Mark Certificates Accepted for Trade Mark Recordation
In July 2026, Tanzania's Fair Competition Commission (FCC) clarified that foreign trade mark registration certificates and ARIPO registrations designating Tanzania may be used to support trade mark recordation applications, provided a valid registration certificate is submitted.
Introduced under the Merchandise Marks (Recordation) Regulations in 2025, this update provides greater flexibility for rights holders, as recordation requests were previously limited to national registrations. While a pending national application alone remains insufficient for recordation purposes, applicants may now rely on a corresponding foreign or ARIPO registration certificate, although the FCC may still request additional supporting documentation.
The development is expected to strengthen anti-counterfeiting efforts and facilitate access to customs enforcement mechanisms for international brand owners operating in the Tanzanian market.
