Georgia Accedes to Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement
Following the ratification of the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indication by the Georgian Parliament on 18 March 2025, Georgia formally deposited its instrument of accession with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on 14 July 2025. The Geneva Act will enter into force in Georgia three months following the accession date, on 14 October 2025.
Accession to the Geneva Act will allow Georgian applicants to protect their regional brands abroad as appellations of origin or geographical indications through a single application and upon payment of one set of fees. Examples include renowned wines Khvanchkara and Kakheti, the cheese Tushuri Guda and traditional candy Churchkhela.
The Geneva Act, concluded in 2015, and the Lisbon Agreement, concluded in 1958, constitute the Lisbon System for the international registration and protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications, which currently covers 73 countries.
