Aliya’s practice covers all areas of intellectual property law, with a particular focus on patent, design and trademark prosecution and enforcement. She advises our clients on all aspects of IP rights protection in Kazakhstan and represents them before the Kazakh IPO, as well as before customs, courts and other state authorities.

Prior to joining PETOŠEVIĆ in 2020 and CWB in 2023, Aliya worked as an IP manager at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan for seven years, where she advised scientists on protecting their inventions and drafted policies and regulations regarding the management of the university’s IP portfolio. Aliya also worked as an IP lawyer in the Almaty and London offices of an international law firm where she advised local and international clients on IP protection strategies. She has also provided pro bono IP services to numerous startups in Kazakhstan.

Experience
  • Handled trademark prosecution and enforcement for a global streaming service and a leading international sports organization in Kazakhstan, and managed their local trademark portfolios

  • Oversaw trademark portfolios in Kazakhstan for well-known beverage companies, managing opposition and cancellation procedures to ensure strong protection of clients’ trademarks in the local market

  • Managed a Eurasian and national patent portfolio for a leading construction material manufacturer

  • Advised a major fashion retailer, including winning opposition cases, handling refusals, managing trademark renewals, and representing the client before the Board of Appeals and courts to protect their IP rights in Kazakhstan

  • Conducted investigations related to trademark infringements and counterfeit products in Kazakhstan for a global consumer goods company, achieving a favorable resolution by identifying and targeting infringing stores and entities, and taking legal measures

  • Provided continuous trademark consulting services to a leading technology firm, overseeing trademark filings, advising on opposition and invalidation proceedings, preparing authorization paperwork, addressing objections, and settling disputes to safeguard the company’s IP assets
