Ukrainian Wine Companies Fined for Unfair Competition
The Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee has recently fined two Ukrainian wine companies, Tayrovo Winery LLC and Vynal LLC, for violating the local competition legislation by using misleading bottle labels.
Tayrovo Winery was fined EUR 23,000 following a complaint filed by the Prosecco Consortium, whose members export wine products bearing this protected designation of origin to Ukraine. Tayrovo Winery used the ‘Prosecco’ designation on its wine labels without the Consortium’s permission.
In a separate case, wine company Vynal was fined EUR 243,000 following complaints by Georgian companies Sarajishvili JSC and Telavskyi Vinnii Lyoh JSC, known for producing authentic Georgian wines and cognacs and distributing them in Ukraine. Vynal advertised Ukrainian wine labeled ‘Adjari’ through various channels, including television and the internet. By using the name of the Georgian region Adjari, Vynal created the impression that the products originated in Georgia, potentially leading to consumer misperceptions.
